SATURN QUARTET

Saturn Quartet: A New Orleans Jazz Ensemble

The Saturn Quartet is a distinguished jazz ensemble hailing from the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Known for their innovative approach to traditional jazz, they have carved a unique niche in the world of American Art Music. The quartet consists of four exceptional musicians whose collective talents and creative synergy have captivated audiences both in the United States and internationally.

The Saturn Quartet was formed in 2010 by four like-minded musicians who met at a jam session in New Orleans’ historic French Quarter. Drawn together by their shared passion for jazz and a desire to explore new musical horizons, they decided to form a group that would push the boundaries of the genre while staying rooted in its rich traditions.

The  members of the Saturn Quartet are:

  • Ricardo Pascal (Saxophone): Ricardo Pascal is a saxophonist, composer, arranger, and educator with 15 years of experience. He has collaborated with top jazz artists and performed with The Modern Jazz Generation at venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. He is also featured on CBS’s 60 Minutes..
  • Brendan Polk (Piano): Brendan Polk, from Savannah, Georgia, began playing classical piano at four and discovered jazz at twelve. He studied jazz performance at Florida State University with mentors like Marcus Roberts.
  • Robin Sherman (Bass): Robin Sherman is a musician, composer, and occasional playwright based in New Orleans. He holds degrees in music from Florida State University (B.M.) and the University of New Orleans (M.M.). He leads the Saturn Quartet, whose music has been featured on jazz radio since their debut in 2022.
  • Gerald T. Watkins (Drums): Gerald performs with top local musicians and tours internationally. He has worked with members of the Marsalis family, The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and others. In addition to performing, Gerald is passionate about teaching and mentoring young creatives in New Orleans.

The Saturn Quartet’s music is a testament to the diversity and evolution of jazz as a form of American Art Music. Their style is an eclectic blend of traditional New Orleans jazz, bebop, modern jazz, and elements of classical music. This fusion of influences creates a distinctive sound that is both innovative and deeply rooted in jazz history.

The quartet draws inspiration from legendary jazz musicians such as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Duke Ellington, as well as contemporary artists who continue to shape the genre. Their compositions and arrangements reflect a deep understanding of jazz’s intricate structures and a willingness to experiment with new ideas.

Since their formation, the Saturn Quartet has been committed to preserving and advancing the legacy of New Orleans jazz. They have performed at numerous prestigious venues and festivals, earning acclaim for their energetic and engaging performances. The Saturn Quartet is deeply committed to education and community engagement. They regularly conduct workshops and masterclasses for aspiring musicians, sharing their knowledge and passion for jazz with the next generation. Through these educational initiatives, they aim to inspire young artists and foster a greater appreciation for jazz and American Art Music.

Their work in the community extends beyond music education. The quartet actively participates in outreach programs, bringing music to underserved communities and using their art to uplift and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. This commitment to social responsibility and cultural enrichment is a core aspect of the quartet’s mission.

The Saturn Quartet is known for their willingness to explore new musical territories and collaborate with artists from various genres. This openness to experimentation has led to groundbreaking projects that have expanded the boundaries of jazz and American Art Music.

One notable collaboration was with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra, where the quartet performed a series of concerts that combined jazz improvisation with orchestral arrangements. This innovative fusion of genres was met with critical acclaim and demonstrated the quartet’s versatility and creative vision.

In addition to their work with orchestras, the Saturn Quartet has collaborated with visual artists, dancers, and poets, creating multidisciplinary performances that engage audiences on multiple sensory levels. These collaborations highlight the quartet’s commitment to artistic innovation and their belief in the power of music to transcend boundaries.

The Saturn Quartet is a shining example of the enduring spirit and evolving nature of jazz as an American Art Music. Their innovative approach, dedication to excellence, and commitment to community engagement have solidified their place as one of the leading voices in contemporary jazz.
