THE STORY
THE SOUND WALL
in Opelika is a vibrant music hub founded by Rob and Jen Slocumb, members of the folk-rock duo Martha’s Trouble.
Established in 2017, it began as a creative space within a historic home, offering a recording studio and venue for intimate live performances. Over the years, The Sound Wall has evolved into a cultural cornerstone for the community, hosting not only concerts but also educational music programs through the Sound Wall Music Initiative (SWMI), which was founded in 2019.
The venue has become known for fostering the arts in Opelika, attracting both local and nationally renowned artists. Its events, including the Opelika Songwriters Festival, The Sound Wall Jazz Series and Live! At The Wall showcase a wide range of talent, enriching the area’s musical landscape.
The Sound Wall’s home in Opelika is a beautifully restored house built in 1907, rich with historic charm and character. Rob and Jen Slocumb, the founders, undertook an extensive renovation of the property when they purchased it in 2016. The home had aged gracefully but required significant work to transform it into the modern music venue and recording studio that it is today.
During the restoration, the Slocumbs were careful to preserve the building’s historic features, such as its original hardwood floors, intricate woodwork, and classic Southern architecture. They balanced this preservation with necessary updates, including soundproofing and state-of-the-art recording equipment to create a professional space for musicians. The renovations also included a loft apartment above the venue to house visiting artists.
The result is a space that feels both historic and contemporary, combining the warmth and history of the early 20th century with the functionality needed for today’s music performances and recordings.
